Teacher: Mrs Donald
Teaching
grades 5 and 6 in the former ballroom
of the Mayor's residence, Georgetown.
"We
started off with Queensland Correspondence in 1958 and then became students
of
the Interim School, staffed by mothers. Our Mum was one of the original staff,
teaching a composite class of Grades 5 and 6. (She had to put up with both
her daughters in her class!)
Our
time in Penang was exotic and unusual and so different from the lives we had led
in Australia.
My sister and I would roam the local area out of school hours
and made many and varied acquaintances: the workers at the race course who'd eat
the apples we'd taken for the horses; Larry at the reservoir who'd let us into
the back offices; the monks at the Ayer Itam temple who liked it when we fed the
tortoises; the Malaysian kids we'd meet at the creek and climb over the huge rocks
with. And fortunately there are lots of photos to remember this time by."
