Discovery of this site brought back a flood of bitter sweet memories. The
friends I made and the experiences I had are some of the best in my life.
I remember the rain lashing on the thatched roof of the classroom and the
rush of water down the monsoon drains. I remember movie nights at the Hostel
and the Snows club when we'd get a plate of chips with heaps of tomato sauce.
I remember basketball and badminton at the Hostel and watching mudskippers
from the concrete wall.
Like Pat Lucas I remember the call to assembly with Led Zeppelin blaring form
the speakers and getting ice cones from the carts when school ended.
I remember swimming at Bata Ferringhi before the resorts were built when only
the kampongs where there.
I am now living in Canberra and working in the Public Service. My husband
I travelled back to Penang in 2002 to satisfy my curiosity about whether things
had changed. And they had (as all things do).
I'd like to hear from anyone who was in the same classes as me and how your
lives have evolved. If like me - nothing like you expected in those innocent
days of youth.
