I have so many great memories of those 2 years in Penang and reading through others' stories brings back even more. I really miss the rotis, local coffee, Hillside makan carts, satays, Kickapoo Joy Juice, soft drink in plastic bags, the Anchor Man, Lim the fruit & veg man, Bok the shoemaker on his scooter, Kek Lok Si temple and its wonderful stalls and smells of local food and incense combined, the Pulau Tikus markets, the Palm Beach Hotel at Batu Ferringi with the 'all you can eat' menu for 8 ringgit, the monkey gardens with big sad Inpu the orangutang in the cage, the hostie and its movie nights, beer garden and incoming charters, the attap classrooms and our school excursion to the Cameron Highlands for strawberries and open fires(!), and those fierce electrical storms.
I remember the teachers Mr Donovan, Mr Watham, Miss Vincent, Mr Roxborough, Miss Leslie, Mr Birss, Miss Stubbs, Mr Scott and Mr Dunn, etc.
Thanks for this great site Cynthia, I hope more people continue to add to it.
