I arrived off the plane after whipping some airforce guy at poker who was sitting next to me on the plane. I was 10 at the time with long hair half way down my back and a fringe to my nose.

The Deadmans and the Warrens came over that first night as our fathers had known each other for years.

The first words I remember being talk to speak were the swear words which . . . surprise, surprise . . . they are the only ones I can remember after 28-30 years.

I started in Mr Cooke's class in year 5 and soon made many knew friends.

My first friend that I made was Greg Bowtell. We became like brothers and we both lived in Ipswich after Malaysia and lived at each others houses. Sadly I lost my best mate Greg, who died in front of me in 1990 at the tender young age of 25 years. Rest In Peace my good mate.

This was also where my interest in all of the cute girls really took off and it hasn't changed to this day. LOL.

Getting that mongrel bus from Butterworth to the school was a pain in the bum . . . but I had some really great times . . . especially when I got promoted to the back seat with yahoos like Robert Saunders. I'm glad our bus escort couldn't see out of the back of her head or I would have gotten the cane on a daily basis.

I loved the food and still love a feed of hot curry, or anything with chillies and my seafood passion started then too.

To my first loves . . . Tracey White, Dawn White, Alison Dickie, Wendy Felsch, Robyn Stenner and a few others who I won't name . . . I will always remember you. XXXX

I loved to play soccer . . . played for the Blockheads with Allan Farley and against Bobby Charlton, Ron wilson, Steven Creese, Tim Roser etc. even though I had always been a rugby league player prior to Malaysia.

The fun times had by the Deadmans (Chris & Mark) and the Warrens (Debbie & Alan) and my sister, Jenny . . . at the many parties at the Warren's house . . . will stay with me forever.

I don't miss the smell of the durian fruit or those rotting fish drying out in the melting sun. Malaysia you can keep those all to yourself!

Scanning through the many names . . . I started to remember people and good memories started flooding back to me.

I am priviledged to have grown up in Malaysia and to have a bond with people that even after 28-30 years is still there in some way.
