RAAF School Penang was the best time
I had at school & living in Butterworth was something I'll never forget,
we were all priviledged to be there. Certain 'smells' of the place still are
very vivid too...makan carts, putrid monnie drains & those stinking
bloody durians!! I loved learning the culture & the language, &
the language came in handy when we were on the school bus, on the ferry...I
knew how to tell the locals where to go!! I still have contact with a few
friends from the school but there are some who I think about but don't know
where they are. Life moves on....but the memories stay with us forever.
The pool on base....boy are there some stories there! Can remember my father
lecturing me..."you stay out of that bloody pool hall, all the army guys
hang out in there". Guess what? I married one of them, 24 years ago and
we're still going strong.
There were some pretty good teachers at the school too and to this day, I
am still in regular contact with one of them.
Can remember we could go to the local kampong shop and buy a ciggie for 5
cents! Things really have changed!
How many of you kept your school uniform, especially the one you would have
worn on your very last day at the school....the one that got it's pockets
ripped off, buttons ripped off then all your friends signatures; farewells
written all over it? I still have mine, I'll treasure it for life; when I
die, my daughter will keep it.....oh, what memories!!
Regards,
Jenny...aka 'crumpsy' to some of you
