My family and I sailed to Penang on the "Sydney" in March 1961 and moved into a house at 53V Choong Lye Hock Road, Tanjong Tokong. The Chinese cemetary was right behind the house and the Hostel just down the road.

I started grade 6 at the school in Residency Road and I think Mr McLaughlin was the teacher. In 1962 we moved to the new RAAF School at Hillside. I recall that Mr Bannister was one of the teachers there (perhaps form 1) and Miss O'Kane was the home economics teacher.

The RAAF School and Penang will always have a special place in my heart. As a young teenager I enjoyed the freedom and fun we had. I am sure that I would not have been allowed the same liberties at home in Australia. I can remember going to the pictures at the Hostel on Friday nights and the parties we had.

I married Richard in 1969 and we have three children, aged 31, 28 and 25. My husband was also in the RAAF and we enjoyed several overseas postings but never to Malaysia. I might just have to go to the reunion in 2005!
